So now we're rushing head long into 2012. The wedding photography shows great signs of continual growth, thanks to our internet marketing and our strengthning realationships with local wedding businesses.

Lovers in the snow

Here at Portrait Wedding Photographers we have good news for brides looking to get married in 2012/13. For 2012 all of our wedding packages remain at 2011 prices. There is no need to go out to grab a bargin in the sales, the best bargin is right here. So how does that effect 2013 pricing, I hear you ask. As someone who has been married, I know how difficult it can be to juggle your wedding budget. This is why I introduced a fixed price for our wedding packages. Choose us as your wedding photographers and secure the date with the £100 booking fee and that secures the wedding photography price. It doesn't matter how many years ahead your wedding is - we will honour that deal and fix your price.

Think about it. Normally prices rise at about 10% per year. So if you are getting married one year ahead thats a straight 10% you could be saving. 2 years 20%, or 5 years 50%. Now who would say no to 50% off your wedding photography?

It's worth pointing out that here at portrait wedding photographers, we are no ordinary wedding photographers. Brides often tell us that they consider us experts. Because we only specialise in wedding photography, that and our 27 years experience!

Butterflies and Logos

It is a cold December afternoon and for once I am glad to be at home, nice and warm, tucked up next to my computer. As a businessman, there are lots of other things to consider, apart from wedding photography - and recently I have been concentrating on why I do what I do, and branding to get that message across.

Having enrolled on to a referral marketing course, by the referral institute, I have had my eyes opened somewhat. I have found that having a business and having your eyes open is a distinct advantage.

A few lessons in and Allison, our tutor is doing great in getting us to where we need to be. I say we because there are a few of us on the course together.

The reason I do what I do, wedding photography is that I know how precious photographs are, and sadly many people only realise this once it is too late. I discovered this fact for myself, when my Mum died at a quite a young age. Marriage is an important time of life and all I want to do is to show people how important this is. Hopefully then, they would love a top wedding photographer to capture their love and laughter for happy ever after.

On to the logo then.

I spent ages trying to think of some great icon, a nike swoosh, a golden M, or even an apple! Then the light came on, if using your company name is good enough for Coca Cola, then it's good enough for me. The logo is important to me, because as we spread our wings from Darlington to Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, York, Essex, Kent, London and Palm Beach Florida - I needed something to tie everything together. I want this to be the logo above.
Most of the website are going to be a pure black and white design, with the accent colour being purple.

The Butterflies are also important to the logo design. Butterflies to symbolise change and there's not many changes bigger than deciding to committ to marriage! Personally the butterflies symbolise the fact that they are there one moment and gone the next. So this ties in with my message of how important it is to capture the beauty, the emotion, the love and the laughter, before it has gone.

The beauty of wedding photographs is that they last forever. Even on a cold winters afternoon, you can re-live your wedding day memories by taking another look at your wedding album.

Some wedding photographers think that the world is flat, some even think that the world stretches only as far as their Town, City or County Boundaries. Thats a strange perception to have in this age of the internet and Internation long haul jet flights!

Can you believe that here at portrait wedding photographers we had those same perceptions! Our target audience was within the County boundaries of Cleveland and County Durham. Then one day as I was talking to David the realisation hit! There is a big world out there, crying out for our quality of wedding photography.

UAE, Dubai weddings

Tentatively we started to spread our wings with North Yorkshire and Tyneside coming into the fold. Soon Essex, Kent and London followed suit. At this stage I think we realised the world was indeed flat! But then we thought what if the world is round? What if there are couple out there, in the new world who would love to know about us?

This is where it got strange. We were talking about possible locations with Europe, when I got a call from a local lady who is getting married in Florence, Italy, next year! This thinking can be dangerously productive! A few days later David got a call from an ex-pat who was living out in Italy with her Ferrari F1 engineer finacee. The following week David got another call confirming that we were needed to photograph a wedding in America. Here another link became apparent - because the wedding in Indianapolis, Indiana was for an Indy car driver and his wife. WOW.

So now, one week after our wedding in USA we are fully aware that the world is indeed round, and we have discovered the New World too.

The Danger Zone and How to Stay Out of Trouble

The "Danger Zone", I thought this was a blog about wedding photography! Well, of course it is. And although a bit dramatic, we wanted to give all you brides, grooms and other interested parties some advice.

What is the Danger Zone, Duncan?

I'm glad you asked. The Danger Zone is an area of wedding photography where you must proceed with caution, and double check the credentials of the photographer you book. This area lies between £0 and £700. Couples booking a photographer offering a price in this region must be alert to any danger signs.

We are not saying that all, or even most photographers whose price lists include a package in this price range are dodgy, but the fact is SOME of them are. Infact here at portrait wedding photographers, we (dependant upon season) have packages in this price region.

Why do we have to be careful?

Many photographers, I use this term losely, when starting out, offer most of their services in this price range. Everyone has to start somewhere and wedding photography is a great profession to be in. But there is so much more to it than being able to take a nice picture. Number 1 skill is being able to relate, and build relationships with the wedding party. You have to be naturally outgoing and jolly! Ask a groom to smile more than 3 times and you are likely to get a deserved punch on the nose. There are way to make people smile, without actually asking them to do it!

Equipment: Having one camera is dangerous! Our photographers usually take 3 along to a wedding, 2 flash guns, spare memory cards, spare batteries. We even have a spare photographer!

But my friend booked a new photographer with one camera and got some good photos:

We're not saying dont book a photographer if you have a budget up to £700, just be careful. Weigh up the risks against the cost advantages. Is it worth the risk of losing all your pictures if the camera fails, or that photographer is ill or has to work over time?

What should I look out for?

1. Is the photographer full time? Try calling at different times of day. Is there only a mobile number?

2. Consultation. Ask to see 5 or 6 sample albums, and ask if it is their own work - while looking in their eyes!

3. For Gods Sake do not pay with cash! You're only chance of getting any money back, should something go wrong is to pay with a debit or credit card.

4. Is the material they send you professional, if you get a letter and price list, folded in 3 and stuck in a small envelope with a second class stamp on it, what does that tell you?
5. Ask them what systems they have in place should anything go wrong with their equipment on the day, or with the images on the memory cards/computer.

If you are satisfied with their answers and you get along with them, part with your booking fee and make sure you get a written receipt!

There is an Easy Way:

Our photographers are full time, you can call us anytime between 8 and 8. We have landline numbers and mobile numbers. At the consultation, we usually take along 7 or 8 different albums and even a slideshow on a tablet PC. You can pay by cash, cheque, or debit/credit card. Our information is handed to you in an A4 sized glossy folder and it is printed on heavy weight glossy paper too. We have spare equipment on the day and as soon as possible your precious images are backed up on computer, external hard drives and DVDs.

If you believe all the hype, apparently most of us will be accessing the internet, through mobile devices in the future. One of the "things" that might help us access certain web pages is the QR code. A bit like a bar code, but if you have a smart phone and an app that reads these codes, the simple act of scanning can take you - as in the code above to our facbook page. Walking in the snow

As I write this photographers blog I am looking out into my garden which is 18 inches deep in snow! Last saturday myself and my other photographer David both had weddings which were snowy. Anything wet is usually a pain as anybody who has anything to do with the wedding just wants to stay inside, dry and warm.

Not the case with my Bride and her wedding party! This girl so wanted to have snow, if the real thing hadn't arrived she would have paid for a snow machine. The wedding was at Redworth Hall near Darlington, to be followed by the wedding breakfast and evening reception.

A Wedding in Wellingtons!

The wedding was fun, fun, fun from Bridal prep to first dance and I never saw the gorgeous bride without a beaming smile on her face. The snow photos were taken after the wedding ceremony, on what would have been the front lawns. But now were about 5 inches deep in fluffy snow. The ladies donned their wellies and we made it out, choosing several locations to make the most of the wintery backdrops.

I strongly believe that this was one of the best weddings I have been to, with fun and laughter everywhere. But, speaking as a wedding photographer - everyone was so "up" for the photographs. Yes it was cold. But do you remember back when you were little and you played out in the snow. Your mum kept telling you to come in as it was so cold, but you never felt it. Well thats what it felt like at this wedding.

New creative imaging

Hello and welcome to my Blog, so glad you are here, I hope you will find the content interesting and I would love to hear your comments, on this, or any other article.

Todays blog is about creativity. Creativity in photography. At College I was very impressed by the work of Jerry Uelsmann. The work he carried out in the dark room was simply breath taking, not to mention inspirational. The beauty of it is that in today computer age, images like Jerrys are much simpler to achieve. Bringing originality, now that is the hard part.

So where to start? Well I took three shots from previous portrait shoots and just decided to "play" with them. If you have time you too can create images like these on your computer.

What I was tring to achieve was an image where the subject was still recognisable, but adding in some creative art to make the empty spaces of the photographs more intersting. The techniques used were similar in all 3 images. The starting image was enhanced by removing spots and wrinkles, the eyes were brightened a touch. The Liquify filter was used to modify body shape to create balance, rather than Barbie doll prerfection. Next, the background was placed OVER the image and its opacity reduced. Then the erase tool was used to remove areas of the background that were not needed.

I must remind you that these are only practice images, but do you think there is any merit in persuing this line? Do you think there is a market out there for photographs that are more creative in nature. Of course there is also an added cost to these images. If you can imagine the amount of time that would go into producing such an image, all that time and skill of the graphic artist has to be accounted for.

With the profusion of digital cameras everyone and their Grandma has hard-drives full to bursting with photographs. Ok, not all will reach the standards of an "award winning" master photographer, but some will be ok, and all will tell a story. I wanted to step to the side of portrait photography, look at it from a different angle and bring in a dollop of artistry. Add some creative graphics, a marriage of photography and digital art.

Here is my final image, the one I spent most time on. I hope you like it. Bear in mind that this image looses a lot of its quality, being dramatically downsized for the web.

Wynyard Hall

For a long time now I have rated Wynyard Hall as one of the best wedding Venues in the North East. This blog is to tell you why. Remember I am looking at this through the eyes of a photographer.

Firstly Wynyard Hall is easy to get too, just a few minutes from the A19/A689 junction.

First sight of the Hall leaves you gasping for air, its is stunningly beautiful, set in acres of lush lawns, fringed by mature tress of all types and then lovingly wrapped by a beautiful lake. The majestic colums at the front of the building make for great arrival shots. Theres also something special about the noise gravel makes under foot, or under tyre. The rear of the Hall is the patio area looking down towards the lake and further beyond the open contryside. As you can see there are plenty of areas for your wedding or event photographs.

Weddings - Wynyard Hall even has its own chapel. The stain glass windows, the decoration, it is all fantastic, maybe a little dark inside but modern cameras will have no problems.

But what if its raining? Good question because there are lots of great venues with outside locations but then lack the same detail and qualities inside should the weather not be on your side. Wynyard Hall is not like the others. it is as photogenic inside as it is outside. The decoration, the great rooms, the furnishings all add a luxury feel and add an extra dimension to your wedding photo reportoire.

Ever been to a fantastic venue, but felt the staff were looking down their noses at you? The staff here are attentive, patient and friendly. I had great evidence of this on Friday at a recent wedding there. The Bride wanted a shot from the other side of the lake across to the Hall, but there was no way the bridal party, me and my assistant and the video guy could all get across. To the rescue a modern day Knight, Sir John Hall, offers us all a lift across in his freshly valeted people carrier. A kindness I shall always remember - the bride and groom will too!

If you are thinking of getting married in the North East and you want your day to be special then do please take a look at Wynyard Hall. Be warned though, that they are well booked up so get in early - or consider having your wedding on a Friday, Sunday or Monday.

Choosing a Wedding Photographer

This is a time of year that we get many requests from brides who are looking to hire a wedding photographer.

To be honest I'm glad not to be in their shoes, apart from the fact I don't suit heels, its a minefield for them out there. Here's why.

There are lots of people with camera out there claiming to be professional wedding photographers. They have their adverts in the papers, in yellow pages. Have great websites, the minority even have studios. My definition of a professional wedding photographer isn't simply someone who takes your hard earned cash in exchange for his or her services. I believe a professional wedding photographer is one whose wedding images reach a verifiable professional standard and someone who protects their clients by carrying both public liability and professional indeminity insurances.

So, how does a bride know if her photographers work has reached an acceptable standard? This is easier to find out than you might think. To be a member of either the Master Photographers Association (MPA) or the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) a photographers work is judged by a panel of highly regarded fellow professionals. So check your photographer is a "full" member of either. I'm a member of the MPA and I have a membership card and certificate to prove it. My company is also listed on the MPA website (thempa.com).

Insurance is one of those things that no-one wants to ask about as its not that important, well it isn't - not until there's a problem! Any of my clients can ask to see my insurance certificates, in fact they are on display at the studio.

Some prospective clients, especially in this time of "credit crunch" then say well so and so can do it cheaper. Indeed true professionals will be more expensive, but not too expensive. Here at Camera Art we offer flexible payment schemes and currently our lowest priced package is £425. Still pricey some might say. But imagine your weekend photographer has trouble and for some reason your photographs are ruined. Then what can you do? With no insurance there would be a long drawn out battle in the courts no doubt. With a professional we simply claim and if necessary take the photos again. I know its not ideal, but its much better than nothing!

Of course being professional means experienced too. Or showroom has over a dozen albums to browse through. When going to visit a client I also can take along 6 or more albums for you to view. On recent client had a photographer turn up with two weddings on a laptop - no albums at all!

You might think well you would say that wouldnt you. And yes I very well might. However the reason for penning this part of my blog is that I had a bride turn up at the studio, directed to me by Citizens Advice because her images were substandard. Brides - it's your wedding day and the start of a new chapter in your life. I don't want any of you starting it by having to go to court because your wedding day images were rubbish.

Camera Gear for Weddings

There are a lot of searches done on the internet regarding the best camera gear for wedding photography. I thought that as a professional wedding photographer I would give my answer.

Before I do though can I give a word of advice, it is not the camera that makes a good or even great wedding photograph - it is the mind and the eye of the photographer, something money can not buy.

I am a self confessed Canonophile so I would use a Canon 5D and a Canon 40D. Both have good resolution and the batteries are the same so only one charger needed. Touch wood, a single battery usually lasts me for a whole wedding which could be 8 hours and 300 images on one camera. Yes, you do need 2 cameras! And backups for all your other equipment too!

Probably more important than the cameras are the lenses. Church and even civil weddings in Halls can be dark to very dark so you need a fast lens to cope with these situations. A fast lens is one that has a large aperture such as f1.8 or f2.8. I dont like changing lenses, it takes time and can lead to dust problems so the lens stays stuck to the camera all day - or in my case nearly all its life.

You will require a short zoom, a wide angle. Something from about 17mm to about 70mm. To get a good fast zoom isn't cheap and I'd recommend something from the Canon L series or a top spec Sigma. You will also need a longer range zoom from about 70mm to either 200 or 300mm. These allow you to get close to the action without getting in peoples faces, an absolute necessity for those of you who prefer the jounalistic approach. If your budget stretches that far then try and get an IS (Image Stabilised) Lens, the last thing you want is camera shake.

In addition to the above you will also need a couple of flash guns, memory cards, spare batteries, tripod and a gadget bag to carry it all in!

New Promotions Vehicle

Hi everyone and welcome to mine and camera art's first blog. We have just taken delivery of our first promotions car. Its a Citroen C4 Loeb in metalic black. This model was launched to celebrate Citroens domination of the World Rally Championship (WRC) over the last 5 years.

Our car was taken to Direct Signs in Darlington to have the decals (stickers) applied. We tried to follow the current WRC looks, but used photography based sponsors in addition to camera art. Sponsors logos include Canon, Sandisk with the bonnet being an almost exact replica of the rally car carrying the logos of both Citroen and Total.

It is hoped that the vehicle will bring increased awareness of Camera art through out our operating area which covers York and Harrogate in the South and up to Newcastle in the North.

So now the petrol head grooms to be can have a good look around the car whilst their brides browse through our vast range of wedding albums. Oh yes, did I forget to mention that we are a professional photographic company specialising in wedding, portrait and commercial work?
